First Aid
Basic aid for minor injuries suffered at school is administered by the School Administrative Officer. In all cases where the injury is of a more serious nature we try to contact parents by phone. If we are unable to contact a parent, further medical aid is sought.

Jewelry
Jewelry is a safety issue. The only jewellery allowed is a watch and sleepers or studs.

Immunization
It is vital that your child has the Pre-School booster before starting Kindergarten. Prevent the threat of serious diseases attacking your child by making sure that immunisation against whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus and polio have been completed. Immunisation can be arranged through your doctor or the local council. Immunisation against mumps and measles is also recommended from 12 - 15 months of age to minimise the risk of serious complications later. New regulations require immunisation certificates to be sighted prior to enrolment. Non immunised students are placed on a register and are excluded from school attendance should cases of these diseases occur at school.

Sick pupils and notes for absences
Sometimes pupils become sick at school and are placed in Sick Bay. Parents are notified if a pupil appears to be too ill to return to the classroom. While we stress the importance of good school attendance, we also urge you not to send sick children to school.

All absences must be covered by a written note to the teacher, explaining the reason for the pupil's absence. Printed absence notepads are available from the office. Notes should be explicit. The note should be sent the day the child returns to school. This procedure is preferable to phoning the school, except in the case of anticipated absences exceeding three school days.

Medication
It is not policy of the school or the Department of School Education for teachers to administer medication at school. Wherever medicine is prescribed by a doctor it should be administered by the child's parent. Mostly this can be organised outside school hours. Where this is just not possible, and the medication is urgent the Office Staff will administer the medication, provided that :
• Parents request assistance from the school.
• Information regarding type of medication, dosage and frequency to be supplied to the school and an indemnity form signed by parent/guardian and a medical advice form signed by the doctor.
• Parents will be able to leave up to a week's supply of the medication in a child-safe container, labelled by the chemist with all the required prescription information. This will be secured in a medicine safe and kept under lock and key at the main office.
• At the required time the student will go to the office where the designated person will dispense the required dose and record same in our medication register.

Ambulance service
The school is covered by an Ambulance Fund so that injured or sick pupils may be transported immediately to Hospital (free of charge to parents).

Table of isolation and quarantine
For the health of other children and staff, pupils who have severe colds and persistent coughs should not be sent to school.

School health screening
School screening is part of the role of a Community Nurse, particularly dental, hearing and sight for Kinders and Year 5. Parents are informed if a child needs to be referred for further testing.

Dogs at School
Parents are requested not to bring dogs to school or allow their dogs to roam the school playground, as they constitute both a health hazard and safety hazard.

Family and community services
The District Officer of the Department of Family and Community Services has a statutory responsibility for the protection of children. Officers are available to discuss any concerns the school authorities or parents may have concerning a child they think may be at risk of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. The District Officer frequently becomes involved with families in a supportive role by assisting with counselling or referral to other agencies.

Safety House program
The school is in a "Safety House" area. The committee is always in need of new committee members and helpers.
