Library
The library is the hub of the school. All children from K-6
are encouraged to borrow books regularly. The library is
open all week.
In the library, children are taught how to find information
for themselves. In addition to books, cassettes, slides,
pictures and videos are available for use by classes.
Book Club
All K - 6 children may purchase books
through the Scholastic Book Club comprising Wombat, Lucky,
Arrow and Star, depending on their reading level.
The aims of the Book Club are to encourage children to read
for enjoyment and to provide reasonably priced books
designed to appeal to children of all abilities.
There is no obligation to purchase books. The orders are
organised by the P&C. The necessary form and correct
amount of money should be enclosed in a sealed envelope
marked "BOOK CLUB" plus your child's name and class, and
sent to the school by the date advertised in the Parent
Newsletter. If you wish to pay by cheque, it should be made
out to "Scholastic Australia".
Canteen
The school canteen is open five days a week where a range
of nutritional food is available. Children are able to
order their lunch each day by writing their name, class and
order on a paper bag and placing it in the class lunch
basket especially provided for this purpose. All orders are
collected when class commences each morning and lunches are
delivered to class at lunchtime. Pupils can purchase other
items from the canteen at both recess and lunchtime.
School Photos
During the year we arrange for individual,
class and special group photos to be taken by visiting
specialists in school photography. (Payment / delivery
arrangements may differ from year to year).
Scripture
Regular religious education lessons are held
weekly by visiting clergy and laypersons approved for this
purpose. All the main religions are catered for with those
parents who do not wish their child to participate in
scripture classes being given the opportunity to request
exclusion by making a written statement to this effect to
the Principal.
Student School Council
Each class in Years 2 to 6 elects two
representatives for the school council. From these
representatives two council presidents are elected. Regular
meetings are held where the council discusses concerns of
the student body and makes representation to the Principal
about these concerns.
Computers
Computer education has a high priority
within the school and receives a high level of funding each
year. Computers are used in all subjects to enhance the
students investigating, communicating and expressing
skills. All children are given the opportunity for hands on
experiences in our ‘state of the art’ computer lab that
increases as they progress through the grades of the
school. The students' are exposed to a wide range of
computer related activities and the school has a
comprehensive range of computer software and hardware to
cater for their needs.
Overall, computing within the school's context is seen as a
people orientated activity and the policies of the school
reflect this. Internet access is available from the
majority of classrooms. Students are required to abide by
an Acceptable Use Policy.
Support Teacher
The school has a Support Teacher Learning.
Children who may need extra assistance in a particular
subject area can be referred to the Support Teacher by the
Class Teacher.
Reading Recovery Teacher
The Reading Recovery Teacher is an Early
Literacy Specialist who works with individual children in
Year 1 with reading and writing difficulties.
School Counsellor
School Counsellors are qualified,
experienced graduate teachers who have additional
counselling qualifications and are registered
psychologists. The counselling service exists in Government
schools for the benefit of all children and their families
who need assistance with any learning, behaviour or
emotional problems. The School Counsellor also works with
teachers to develop school programs which will cater for
specific needs of the children in the classroom. Requests
for assessment and counselling help may come from teachers
or parents.
Parent Helpers
Our school is very fortunate to have the
assistance of many talented parents to help with class
activities. Parent helpers assist in many ways including
listening to children read, helping mathematics and craft
groups and many other ways that help students and teachers.
Your child's teacher may ask for parent helpers during the
year for a variety of reasons and if you are able to help
by offering some time it would be greatly appreciated.
All parents are asked to sign the parent helpers’ book
which is situated in the main entrance foyer and also
outside Rm 7 on the Kindergarten verandah whenever they are
in the school to work with classes. All parent helpers also
need to complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration. This
form needs to be completed once only.
Choir
Children in grades 4 - 6 have the
opportunity to join the School Choir. Performance
opportunities include the Southern Illawarra Music Festival
and the Schools Spectacular as well as a variety of school
functions during the year.
Life Education
Albion Park Public School is fortunate to
have biannual visits by a Life Education Van. Children in
classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 attend lessons to learn
about their bodies as an additional resource to the
PD/Health/PE curriculum area.
